Frequently Asked Questions about Decompression

What are the effects of spinal decompression?

1.) Vertebral separation, which may decrease intradiscal pressure and reduce bulging of nuclear material, and may enhance osmosis from vertebral endplates, increasing fluid/blood/nutrient supply to the discs. 2.) Separation and gliding of the facet joints, establishing potential for improved alignment, articulation, and joint mobility. 3.) Tensing, if not stretching of the system of spinal ligaments. 4.) Widening of vertebral foramina, allowing increased space for spinal nerve roots. 5.) Stretching of the spinal musculature, potentially decreasing its sensitivity to stretch and thereby decreasing muscle spasming/guarding. It is also possible that this stretch may improve blood supply to the posterior soft tissues.

How many treatments are necessary?

Generally, twenty sessions are ideal for disc injuries. Decompression takes time because it works with the body’s natural healing processes.

How should the twenty treatments be scheduled?

Dr. Randy Reed, nationwide speaker on decompression therapy recommends the following treatment program: 4 times first week, 3 times a week for 3 weeks, 2 times a week for 3 weeks, and 1 time a week for 1 week.

How long does it take to administer a decompression therapy session to a patient?

After a 9 minute light pad treatment, a patient undergoes traction for 15 minutes, therefore you can expect to schedule decompression patients every 20-30 minutes.

Who does the set up for decompression?

The doctor, therapist or assistant are able to belt the patient and operate the decompression system.

How does decompression differ from traction?

Traction is the application of long-axis forces to effect elongation/separation. Decompression is the TARGETED application of distractive forces to unload tissues that are currently receiving an atypical load. Targeting results from attention to precision and angle of force application, proper force applied, and force properly sustained.

Is a $100,000 system more effective?

As long as the angle of the pull, the pull strength and duration of the pull is similar, there is no difference in the decompression session offered with our system than compared to a much more expensive system. Results will be the same. In fact, in many cases the expensive systems offer less. For example, most systems require a separate and additional expense for the cervical attachment.

Does your system offer both cervical and lumbar traction?

Yes. You can offer both at one low price.

Is there reimbursement for decompression?

Yes. Billing code 97012 for mechanical traction is reimbursable. Coding for additional treatments include: 98940 Manipulation, 97112 Neuromuscular Re-Education (15 minutes), 97110 Therapeutic Exercise (Stabilizing Exercise), 97530 Kinetic Activity (one on one), 97014 Electrical Stimulation, 97026 Infrared Therapy and 90901 Biofeedback.

Can I charge cash for decompression?

Decompression is an ideal adjunctive therapy because it offers the ability to bill insurances and/or cash programs. An ideal decompression plan offers several billable or cash treatments such as light therapy, electrical stimulation, manipulation, neuromuscular re-education, therapeutic exercise, kinetic activity and nutrition.

What ways will decompression benefit my practice?

Decompression has been highly successful in providing relief and helping patients avoid back surgery. It allows you a new treatment to offer to patients in your office that you have previously been referring out, improving patient retention. Decompression is a great tool for retaining and recruiting new patients. Doctors report that decompression has become one of their best recruiting tools for new patients.

Does the Dynatronics decompression system have a marketing program that comes with it?

Yes. It includes patient brochures, a series of ads in color and black and white, and a waiting room display to help you launch and sustain a comprehensive marketing campaign for Decompression Therapy.

Does THCP offer training on decompression therapy?

Our experienced and highly trained representatives will come right to your office for all of the initial and ongoing training needed to successfully implement decompression into your practice at no charge. This is a great value as you do not need to close your practice, leave your family and travel great distances to receive a one-time training session at a great cost.

Additionally, THCP sponsors Advanced Decompression seminars several times throughout the year for you and your staff. These seminars are one day training for 12 CEU credits.

Does THCP offer all the other tools necessary to implement complete cervical and spinal decompression programs?

Yes. THCP offers everything from high to low tech exercise and rehabilitation products, ranging from light to high resistance, and everything in between. We provide wobble boards, stabilizers, exercise balls, Nautilus, AirDyne exercise equipment, wall exercise systems, complete nutrition programs designed to treat patients needing decompression treatments, plus much more.

What is ADVANCED Decompression and why is it special?

Advanced Decompression is a complete 4-step approach to spinal care to help your patients achieve optimal, long lasting results. Our Advanced Decompression program consists of:

1.) 9 minutes of Light therapy utilizing our patented 8”x10” light pad, the largest and most powerful light pad in the industry with 7,500 mW of power. Light therapy has been cleared by the FDA for the relaxation of muscles and muscle spasms and for the temporary relief of pain, stiffness, and minor muscle and joint aches. By pre-treating prior to traction, the patient not only receives these benefits, decompression is enhanced since the patient is not in as much pain during and after the decompression session and there is less muscle guarding.

2.) Following light therapy, phase II consists of decompressing the intervertebral discs relieving pressure on structures that may be causing low back pain.

3.) Specific nutrition programs for patients undergoing decompression therapy. Designed to provide nutrients that address pain and inflammation, muscle spasms, and nutrients to specifically designed to heal and strengthen connective tissue. Proper healing is essential for long lasting results and helps prevent reoccurrence.

Many patients poor spinal health is caused from poor nutrition. Decompression therapy offers the optimal time to get these nutrients into an area that previously was devoid or impaired and has little or no circulation.

4.) Exercise products are a key component to long term success. These exercises teach the patient the importance of core stabilization and strengthening.

How soon can I get a Dynatronics Decompression System?

We have 4 table colors to choose from that offer a two-week quick ship delivery time. Other colors are available, but require a slightly longer delivery time.
