Encouraging the Bluebird Population with the Aid of Bluebird House Plans
Bluebird populations are start to dwindle down. You can help increase their population by making your backyard attractive to bluebirds by making bird houses using bluebird house plans. These birds require refuge, as spreading human cities take over their natural home grounds. In nature they use other birds’ nests, but when those nests move, change, or become scarce, the bluebird population falls dramatically.
Bird lovers and nature lovers are stepping up to help out these bluebirds with birdhouses designed to accommodate the bluebird. Bluebird house kits and pre-made bluebird houses are also available. However, if you have a good set of bluebird house plans, you can make beautiful bluebird houses easily.
What Makes Good Bluebird House Plans?
You can tell if bluebird house plans are suited based on the mounting type needed. Bluebirds need bird houses that are assembled on tall poles and have smooth, hard surfaces. Bluebirds are susceptible to tree-climbing animals like squirrels, raccoons, cats and snakes. Good bluebird house plans include information on how to keep bluebirds safe from predators.
The Appropriate Bluebird House Environment
However, the site of the birdhouse shouldn’t be too far from trees. Bluebirds love to do their hunting of insects from high in the air. They specially like insects that tend to live in woody areas and areas with plenty of ground vegetation.
Spacing is something you will have to carefully consider if you plan to build a number of bluebird houses. Bluebirds do well when they are out in the open, but they are territorial about their nests and feeding areas. In fact, it is best to place each of your bluebird houses on two or three acres of land. Keep the bluebird houses a few hundred yards apart.
You should also take into account the sparrow population in your area. If you have quite a few sparrows flying around, but not many sparrow nests around, you may be able to draw the sparrows away from the bluebird nests by buying some sparrow house plans with your bluebird house plans. Sparrows like to make mud nests in small spaces, so be sure you get suitable birdhouse plans for this preference.
